This lecture presented at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow discusses the foundations of string pedagogy, including the significance of method, curriculum and ethos. It outlines the ontological nature of performance and consequences for the intentionality of the performer and teacher. Two main characteristics of musical play are particularly discussed: the role of temporality and its irreversible nature and the nature of human movement as balanced and intentional.
